Films earn money in a lot of different ways like broadcasting rights, streams, merchandise, VOD, etc. However, the primary metric in determining the success of a film is figured on the basis of its box office collections. Here is a list of highest grossing hollywood movies that raked in huge sums of money. Spoiler alert! 5 of the top 10 movies are Marvel movies.
1) Avengers: Endgame ($2.790* Billion) –
The last of the Avengers franchise, Avengers: Endgame became the highest-grossing film of all time on 21st July 2019, beating James Cameron’s Avatar. Directed by the Russo brothers (Anthony and Joe Russo), Avengers: Endgame was one of the most anticipated movies of all time. Part-1 of the greatest crossover of all time (Avengers and The Guardians of the Galaxy) was released in the last week of April of 2018. The name of the movie wasn’t made clear to the fans clear until the release of the trailer.
Made with an approximate budget of $356 Million (3rd most expensive movie of all time), Endgame was released worldwide on 26th April 2019 and was highly appreciated by fans and critics all over the world. The fans were quite upset as this was the last movie of two of the most popular MCU characters, Iron Man (played by Robert Downey Jr.) and Captain America (played by Chris Evans).
In its first weekend, Avengers: Endgame made a record of $1.2 Billion in the worldwide box office.
It became the fastest movie to cross the 1 Billion and 1.5 Billion worldwide in just 5 days and 8 days respectively & Avengers End Game becomes highest grossing hollywood movies on the first Number.
2) Avatar ($2.789 Billion) –
Released in December 2009, Avatar was the #1 highest-grossing movie of all time until Sunday 21st July, when Avengers: Endgame took over. The movie was heavily praised for its groundbreaking visual effects. The film was released in a total of 14,000 screens worldwide. It made a collection of $26,752,099 on the first day of the release and $77,025,481 in its first weekend.
Avatar crossed the 1 Billion mark on the 19th day of its release and become to the 5th movie to do so. It was the number 1 movie at the domestic box office for 7 consecutive weeks and 11 consecutive weekends. On 31st January 2010, Avatar became the first film to cross the 2 Billion dollar mark. The movie was re-released with some extended footage which made a total of $760 Million alone.
3) Titanic ($2.187 Billion) –
Released with a whopping budget of $200 Million in 1997, Titanic was the most expensive movie of its time. The movie was based on the sinking of the RMS Titanic. The film was appreciated by many and was nominated for 14 Academy Awards while winning 11 of them. Off its initial release, this James Cameron movie grossed a total of $1.84 billion on the box office charts and was the highest-grossing film of all time until Avatar (also directed by James Cameron) beat it for the #1 spot after 12 years.
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sinking, Titanic was re-released in 3D in 2012. It became the second-ever film to cross the $2 Billion mark. In 2017, the film was re-released again to celebrate its 20th anniversary.
4) Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($2.068 Billion) –
The epic space-opera produced, co-written and directed by J.J.Abrams was the first instalment of the sequel Star Wars trilogy. Star Wars: The Force Awakens was widely anticipated by fans as Disney is one of the producers of the film, had it backed with extensive marketing. Being derivative of the original trilogy, The Force Awakens received some criticism. The film broke various box office records and became the highest-grossing film of the franchise and of 2015. It received 5 nominations in the Academy Awards and won the award for the Best Special Visual Effects.
5) Avengers: Infinity War ($2.048 Billion) –
This Avengers movie was one of the most hyped movies of the time as it was the first collaborative movie Marvel had ever made. The Guardians of the Galaxy made an appearance for the first time in the Avengers franchise. Heavily loved by fans and critics all over the world, Avengers: Infinity War made a massive $640.5 Million in its first week at the box office beating the previous record $541.9 Million by the 2017 movie, The Fate of the Furious. It became the fastest movie to cross the 1 Billion mark in a mere 11 days. It joined Avatar, Titanic and the Star Wars movie in the 2 Billion clubs.
6) Jurassic World ($1.671 Billion) –
The first part of the Jurassic World trilogy and the fourth instalment of the Jurassic Park franchise, Jurassic World was released on 29th May 2015. Starring Chris Pratt as the main lead, the film was made with a budget of about $150 Million. Jurassic World became the first film ever to generate $500 Million in its first week. It went on to make a Billion dollars on its 13th day on the box office. Outside North America, Jurassic World became the highest-grossing film of the Jurassic Park franchise in 25 countries.
7) The Avengers ($1.519 Billion) –
The sixth film in the Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, The Avengers was the first movie in which all the Avengers Superheroes were seen together. In 2017, it was featured as one of the greatest 100 films of all time in Empire magazine’s poll of the 100 greatest movies. The Avengers grossed $623.4 Million in the US and Canada and $895.5 Million in other countries for a total of $1.519 Billion. It became the highest-grossing superhero film, the highest-grossing Disney film as well as the highest-grossing film of the year.
8) Furious 7 ($1.516 Billion) –
The seventh instalment of the Fast and the Furious franchise, Furious 7 was released on 3 April 2015 and became a critical blockbuster upon release. The film marks the last appearance of one of the lead characters, Paul Walker who died in a tragic single-car accident with only half of the filming completed. The rest of his scenes were completed with the help of Walker’s brothers, Caleb and Cody Walker who were used as stand-ins. The film made a business of $353 Million in the US and Canadian region and $1.163 Billion in other countries of the world. Furious 7 is the highest-grossing movie of the 8 film franchise and has generated a total of $1.516 Million at the box office.
9) Avengers: Age of Ultron ($1.405 Billion) –
Avengers: Age of Ultron was the sequel of the 2012 film, Avengers. With a budget of $365 Million, it is the second most expensive movie of all time. Directed by Joss Whedon, the Age of Ultron grossed $459 Million in the United States and Canada and $946.4 Million in the rest of the world while making a total box office earning of about $1.4 Billion. The film was the 4th highest-grosser of 2015 in the United States and the 5th highest worldwide.
10) Black Panther ($1.35 BIllion) –
Based on the Marvel Comics with the same name, Black Panther was the 18th movie of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Chadwick Boseman was cast as the main lead of the film, Ryan Coogler directed the film and co-wrote the screenplay with Joe Robert Cole. The film received 7 nominations in the 2018 Academy Awards and won awards for the Best Production Design, Best Original Score and the Best Costume Design. Kendrick Lamar and TDE made the album for the film. Generating around $1.35 Billion, Black Panther was the highest grossing hollywood movies of 2018.
