Munawar Faruqui has won the first season of Kangana Ranaut’s reality show Lock Upp. The first and second runners-up were declared as Payal Rohatgi and Anjali Arora, respectively.
Munawar Faruqui has been named the winner of Lock Upp after fighting for basic necessities for 70 days. Payal Rohatgi, Anjali Arora, Azma Fallah, and Shivam Sharma were also finalists in Kangana Ranaut’s show. Munawar also received a cash award of Rs 20 lakh and a brand new vehicle in addition to the trophy.
Unlike most reality shows, this one chose its winner based on more than just votes. The host was given the opportunity to speak first. Munawar received the most votes, but Kangana chose him as the winner as well.
Munawar arrived on the show fresh from his controversy. Last year, he was imprisoned for a month for allegedly “insulting Hindu gods and goddesses” during one of his shows. Many of his shows were cancelled after he was released on bail. The comedian later stated in a statement that he was imprisoned for a joke he never made. He also hinted towards the end of his comic career. “Nafrat jeet gayi, artist haar gaya (hate has won, the artist has lost). I’m done, goodbye. Injustice,” he had written.
Munawar spoke with one media before the performance and stated Lock Upp will push him out of his comfort zone. “Firstly, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being controversial,” he remarked when we asked him why he chose a show that is likely to thrive on disputes. It simply means that your side of the story was not heard, or that you were taken out of context. I never wanted to be involved in any sort of controversy. I never went to the media to make a bawaal out of my statement (commotion). I quickly erased the segment of my video that had caused folks to be offended. It was the general population who kept it in the news for a year. I didn’t want to be controversial, but they forced me to be.”
Munawar Faruqui dubbed the “Mastermind of Lock Upp,” was praised for his intelligence and ability to play the game. Fans praised his friendship with Anjali Arora, dubbing them ‘Munjali.’ On the show, celebrity designer Saisha Shinde showed her admiration for him. Munawar, on the other hand, admitted to being in love with someone outside of the show. The comic also discussed his past, including his divorce, his mother’s suicide, and his sexual abuse as a child. His story and ascent from poverty resonated with the audience, who chanted for him ‘Bad**s Dongriwala’ and ‘Munawar For The Win.’
Munawar was declared the winner, with Payal Rohatgi and Anjali Arora coming in second and third, respectively.
