Born on 12 December 1950 as Shivaji Rao Gaekwad to a police constable Ramoji Rao Gaekwad in a Maratha family in Bangalore. He was named after the great Shivaji Maharaj. He completed his primary education from the Gavipuram Government Kannada Model Primary School and later joined the Acharya Pathasala Public School. During his earlier days, he was also a member of the Ramakrishna Math where he studied the Vedas.
He did a few menial jobs before pursuing his passion. He worked as a porter, a carpenter, and a bus conductor before he joined the Madras Film Institute. His family members did not support his decision, but it was his friend Raj Bahadur who helped him in this phase. Rajini also learned Tamil in the meantime to make his foray into the industry.
