Roman Reigns (Leati Joseph “Joe” Anoaʻi) is a WWE superstar and has been its face since 2014. Born in the Samoan Anoa’i family, Reigns is connected with former WWE superstars like Yokozuna, Umaga, and Rikishi. He is cousins with The Uso Brothers which also appear on the same stage. Reigns have headlined numerous WWE pay-per-view events, including four straight WrestleManias (31, 32, 33 and 34).

Being a WWE superstar was not the first choice of the Big Dog. Roman Reigns is a former football (American football) player. He was signed by Minnesota Vikings and the Jacksonville Jaguars of the NFL in 2007 but was released as being diagnosed with Leukemia. Later in 2008, Edmonton Eskimos, a team in the CFL (Canadian Football League). He played with them for a season and was unfortunately released in November of the same year.

He made his FCW (Florida Championship Wrestling, now NXT) debut on August 19, 2010, using the ring name Roman Leakee. Later in the year 2012, WWE rebranded FCW to NXT and Roman was given his new stage name, Roman Reigns.

He made his main roster television debut alongside Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose on November 18, 2012, at Survivor Series where the trio assaulted Ryback. The trio declared themselves as ‘The Shield’ and vowed to rally against injustice. They won numerous matches as a tag team continued working together until ‘The Shield’ broke apart when Seth Rollins betrayed them and started working for ‘The Authority’.

After Rollin’s betrayal, Reigns continued working with Ambrose until he was put into world title contention. After his Battle Royal victory, he was put into a ladder match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship title at ‘Money in The Bank’ but failed to grab it. His second pay-per-view event was in July in a fatal four-way match against John Cena, Randy Orton, and Kane where he had to face defeat at. Following the event, there began a feud between him and Orton which resulted in a match at Summerslam in August which Reigns won.

Next month, he was to face Seth Rollins at the Night of Champions but could not as he developed a legit incarnated hernia which required surgery prior to the match. Rollins was declared as the winner via forfeit. Reigns returned to the stage of Raw to accept the Slammy Award for the “Superstar of the Year” of 2014 on December 8.

He won the 2015 Royal Rumble by single-handedly eliminating Big-Show, Kane, and Rusev. This year also marked his first defeat by pinfall in a singles match against Big-Show with help of Rollins’ interference. On the stage of Wrestlemania 31, Rollins cashed in his Money in the Bank contract to enter in an ongoing match between Reigns and Brock Lesnar, turning it into a triple-threat match. Reigns suffered defeat while he was pinned out by Rollins.

On May 17, Reigns failed to win the World Championship once again when he competed in a fatal four-way match against Orton, Ambrose, and Rollins. At the Night of Champions on September 20, Reigns teamed with Ambrose and Chris Jericho in a tag team match against Brawn Strowman, Bray Wyatt and Luke Harper where they suffered defeat. His feud with Bray Wyatt ended when he defeated him in a Hell in a Cell match on October 25.

On October 26, Reigns won a fatal four-way match involving Kevin Owens, Alberto del Rio, and Dolph Ziggler to become the number one contender for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Unfortunate Rollins had an injured knee which resulted in him disqualifying from the tournament. Reigns defeated Dean Ambrose at the finals of the Survivor Series on November 22 to become the WWE Heavyweight Champion for the first time. His happiness didn’t last long though, Sheamus cashed in his Money in the Bank contract and pinned Roman out thus ending his reign in only 5 minutes.
Reigns was offered a re-match against Sheamus on the next night on Raw where he emerged victorious despite numerous interferences.

On January 26, 2016, Reigns had to defend his title at Royal Rumble. He scored a total of 5 eliminations after entering first and lasting for about an hour but unfortunately getting eliminated by the League of Nations. Triple-H emerged victorious thus being crowned as the World Heavyweight Champion. On February 22 at Fastlane, Reigns defeated Triple-H to become the champion for the third time. His third reign lasted 77 days when he lost the title against Rollins at the Money in the Bank on June 19.
On June 21, Reigns suffered a 30-day suspension after being found guilty of the violation of WWE’s Wellness Program. He tweeted his apology in response. This led to him being scripted to lose his world title at the Money in the Bank event.

At the Clash of Champions in 2016, Reigns became the United States Champion where he defeated Rusev to crown the title. He lost his title to Chris Jericho in a handicap match with Kevin Owens. Reigns later set his eyes on the Universal Championship title which has newly-held by Brock Lesnar but couldn’t succeed despite many opportunities. Reigns defeated John Cena on September 24 at No Mercy and described it as the biggest win of his career. He finally defeated Brock Lesnar at the Summerslam to be crowned as the new Universal Champion.

On October 22, 2018, Reigns announced his hiatus and relinquished his title on Raw and revealed that his Leukemia had returned after 11 years of battling. He made his return to WWE on February 25, 2019, and is currently drafted to the Smackdown brand.
